Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are a phenomenal way to replace missing teeth and restore the aesthetics and function of your teeth and smile.

There are multiple benefits to getting dentures:

  • They are durable and long-lasting
  • They restore your facial appearance
  • They are removable, so they’re easier to clean
  • They improve your ability to bite and chew food

Dentures help to eliminate self-confidence issues due to missing teeth in your smile. The best way to determine if full or partial dentures can replace your missing teeth is to schedule a consultation with your dentist.

What types of dentures do dentists offer?

Conventional removable full dentures

Conventional full dentures are for you if you’ve lost all of your teeth on your upper or lower jaw. These artificial teeth attach to a gum-colored plastic base that sits against your gums.

Immediate Removable full dentures

These dentures are exactly the same as conventional full dentures. The only difference is that prior to losing all your teeth, Dr. Simmons or Dr. Zuidema takes impressions of your mouth to make your dentures. The benefit is that your dentures are available immediately so you won’t have to spend any time without teeth.

Partial Removable dentures

This type of denture is a wonderful choice if you still have some healthy teeth and want to keep them from shifting.  The partial denture consists of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base. These dentures may have a clasp system to secure the partial denture in your mouth.

Implant-supported fixed and removable dentures

With implants as the support there are a variety of options to secure a more stable and strong environment for dentures.  The dentures can be permanently placed like a bridge or attached in a way that they are removable as needed. An implant supported fixed or removable denture does not rest or rock on your bone and tissue.  This enables you to have more comfort in eating. It also prevents the bone loss that is common over time with tissue-supported dentures.

The first step to understand more about partial, full and implant supported dentures is that the doctors at Brite Smiles Dental Care would provide you with a thorough dental exam to make sure dentures are right for you.  They would carefully review your options and concerns.

What can I expect while getting dentures?

The doctors at Brite Smiles Dental Care understand that dentures can be challenging for some people. If you have never had dentures, they will feel different. There will be an adjustment period. The doctors will work with you over the process of making the dentures to create the aesthetics and feel of the dentures to be the best they can be and follow up with you if adjustments are necessary.

Replacement dentures have their own unique situation. They can be more challenging a fit the second time around due to bone loss. The doctors will review carefully what your options for new dentures are.
